Presentation by Maria Bella, Aqua Conscience
Because not all drownings are reported by the media, results underestimate the true number of fatalities in pools with lifeguards on duty. Non-lifeguards (e.g. other swimmers or bystanders) initially identified fatal drowning victims twice as often as lifeguards did. For every fatal drowning, there are at least four additional non-fatal drowning incidents.
Maria Bella
Maria Bella has been actively involved in the aquatics industry for more than 40 years. She has operated numerous facilities and served as a subject matter expert for the Model Aquatic Health Code and International Swimming Pool & Spa Code. Bella provides consulting services to directors of college/university, municipal, school district and waterparks in standard of care for plant operations as well as proper positioning of lifeguards.

"You always need to safeguard your employees against overwork and burnout, but now isn't the time to prioritize work-life balance. Rather, you need to preach survival...Work should be a distraction to the craziness, and being employed and continuing to grow your career is a positive, not a negative."
Four Surprising Leadership Habits You Need Now (Inc.)
"During a crisis, leaders tend to hyperfocus on managing the threat and neglect long-range thinking. With many businesses shuttered and others struggling to survive, some leaders are thinking only in tactical terms. They’re concerned with week-to-week survival, not long term vision...That’s understandable, but it’s a mistake. The ability to survive any crisis begins with a vision for what’s possible." (emphasis added)
The No.1 Mistake Leaders Make in Crisis (Michael Hyatt & Co.)
"Our conclusion is that we should stop wasting time planning ahead. Instead, we’ve adopted a “now, next, later” framework for decision making during crises. Today, despite the pandemic, we’re efficiently making progress in matters where we have control, and we’re gaining precious time to gird for changes that may or might not happen in the near future."

Presentation by Kelly Martinez, Lifeguards Love YouTube
Originally aired April 17, 2020
We owe it to our staff to prepare them for realistic situations. Did you know that foam is present during many drowning (submersion) rescues? Are your lifeguards prepared to deal with GROSS? This session will include simple strategies using basic supplies from the grocery store to take your staff training to the next level.
Kelly Martinez
Kelly has been an Aquatic Professional since 1992. She is currently an Aquatic Recreation Coordinator III for the City of Phoenix, Arizona supervising 29 aquatic facilities and over 500 part-time pool managers, lifeguards, swim instructors and support staff. Kelly is also the co-founder of the website, Lifeguards Love Youtube which is a video library and resource for aquatic professionals to supplement lifeguard training.
Kelly has been presenting nationally and internationally for over 15 years, challenging the status quo and questioning practices that are based on “this is how it has always been done.” This mindset led her to audit everything and then strive to plug the holes. After conducting hundreds of audits, such as Mystery Shopper Audits, Shallow Water Blackout Audits, and Baby Manikin Drop Audits, she now enjoys sharing what she has learned to help eliminate drownings in lifeguarded facilities.

Originally aired April 6, 2020
Accessibility is about more than just a universal change room or a pool lift. Accessibility is about ensuring aquatic staff can provide dignity to all bathers at our aquatic facilities. Understand your own able-bodied bias and how to provide basic training to younger staff.
Adrian Spencer
Adrian grew up thinking his swimming instructors were the coolest people on the beach. This exposure led to a career in aquatics, beginning as a lifeguard and instructor, and culminating with managing a busy facility. The closure of his facility gave an opportunity to pursue a parallel passion in engineering. He graduated from a Mechanical engineering Technologist program, and went on to specialize in fluid systems. These parallel interests all converged when he entered technical sales for commercial pool construction.
Through working as a professional Canadian Ski Patroller, he met a very influential friend with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Witnessing her overcome so much ultimately lead to him being instrumental in bringing a world class accessibility lift to Canadian pools. In his spare time he skis, explores the Atlantic Coast on his Waverunner, trains kids in lifesaving and lifesaving sport, and is the “lifeguard who lifeguards the lifeguards.”

Christian Clavelle
Teaching first-aid and everything safety related has resulted in many life changing experiences for me. Over the years, I’ve become a passionate believer in the power of learning and am reminded and motivated daily to continue helping others to learn how to help in the event of an emergency; at work, home or play.
With 2 beautiful children (that keep me very busy) and an amazingly supportive wife, I count myself blessed when it comes to the work that I’ve chosen to do and hope to continue making a difference in the first-aid world.

A webinar attendee kindly reached out to their regional American Red Cross (ARC) rep to see what comparable US options exist. Here is the correspondence -
Question: "I wanted to touch base to see if you knew about a program that the Canadian Red Cross offers called "Psychological First Aid." In these days of working remotely, I attended a webinar giving an introduction to the program this afternoon. it would great if we had something comparable here for ARC. I'm attaching the course fact sheet that the presenter provided as a reference."
Response: "We do have that course available for our humanitarian volunteers and employees. I have taken the class and it is really a great course. We do not have it in the LTP market- and it is limited in delivery because of the specificity of the instructor. I am not sure whether the Canadian Red Cross is doing this in the LTP or equivalent sector or in their version of Humanitarian. I hope you enjoy the class. It was one I enjoyed."
